Creating Black Characters *with intent! on Tumblr
Image ID: pdf of a word document that reads as follows:

masculinity, and androgyny as separate and unique concepts was life changing. So I wish that nB people would understand that Black gender presentation and gender experience exists on its own axis. Judging Black gender queerness on the scales of the White Man’s gender is always going to make us look lacking. I’m not aiming for whiteness so stop comparing me to it lol.ā€

ā€œBlack trans, intersex, nonbinary, etc. people are stuck living trying to navigate at least two different sets of expectations around gender and gender expression at all times. Not only are we stuck being scrutinized for how well we fit into Eurocentric beauty standards and gender roles despite not being our primary culture, we then STILL have to worry about how well we fit into and how we want to subvert gender and expression in Black communities. I think for the most part we try to work around gender expression in our own culture instead of what white society dictates so we’re not gonna have the same feelings about smthn like. A celebrity or character that you think is ā€˜transition goals’ and oftentimes those examples given are a direct opposite to how we already look. Like my androgyny is nowhere near the same as a Black person as yours are.ā€

ā€œyes I am transmasc yes I am a BLACK WOMAN yes I am a man what’s your problemā€

ā€œhow annoying it is when black queer lingo/aave is hijacked like stud essentially erasing the history of the wordā€

ā€œIn the US at least, it feels way harder to be perceived as masculine where you’re afab. Especially since I’m not very muscular, and curves on Black people seem to be perceived as more feminine. Things that a white guy could do and still pass as a guy (not bind, have long hair or a high voice) make people immediately start misgendering me, and I can’t really stand up for myself too much bc people think angry Black people are threatening.ā€

ā€œI wish nonblacks would understand that like what is gnc is not necessarily universal. Some looks are like. Masc for nonblacks and not for me. Relatedly I wish there was more understanding of racist degendering and masculinization.ā€

ā€œVery underrepresented in media and life alike. If I see any queer themed space I don’t feel excited til I see other brown people there.ā€

ā€œI want people to challenge the belief of what they think a trans person should look like. I’m tired of the default being white. I’m tired of the default being conventionally attractive. All that stuff.ā€

ā€œIt’s always disheartening to see the ā€˜default’ trans person be white and skinny. I feel like ppl have a specific idea of being trans that black ppl just don’t fit into. But I’m here!!ā€ End ID
